Sunday Lunch in the South West

Despite almost continuous rain, the South West region enjoyed a very convivial lunch at the Somerset home of Past President Tony Hill on 23rd September 2012. 34 OMs and representatives from the College were welcomed by President Steven Bishop and his wife Cecilia. In his brief speech, Steven welcomed a wide range of generations to the lunch, many of whom were attending their first Club function for many years. The President also welcomed Dr Chris Stevens, the Second Master, who answered a range of questions about the College, Malaysia and related topics. He also thanked Susan Boss, mother of OM Barnaby Boss, and Valerie Everard, shor co-hosted the event.

In terms of longevity, pride of place went to Major Terence Knox (CO 1940-44) who, with his wife Elizabeth, had travelled from Exeter. Terence joined the College in 1940 and had some fascinating stories to tell about life as a wartime pupil. He was joined by two other war time pupils: John Mercer (C2 1943-48) and Peter Tennant (B1 1943-47).

Jenny Balfour-Paul (B1 1968-69) and Simon Michel (C1 1965-69) particularly enjoyed catching up! They had both been part of a group travelling through Afghanistan and India 30 years ago and hadn't met each other since! The youngest present was Charles Caton (B1 1997-2002), who proved himself a most loyal Marlburian when he went on to play rugby for the OM Malones the following Saturday at the OM Malones v Old Cliftonians Match at Clifton.
