Our congratulations go to Sir Keith Porter, whose achievements were honoured with a knighthood in the 2011 Honours List. His recent work has involved the coordination of the medical care of British troops injured in Iraq and Afghanistan, at the Royal Centre for Defence Medicine in Selly Oak, Birmingham.

The current Marlborough-Swindon collaboration is not the first in the College's history; it revisits a project initiated by John Dancy (Master 1961-72) in the 1960s, when he and the Swindon Director of Education found funds to enable some Swindon boys to do levels at Marlborough. One of them, now Professor Keith Porter, FRCS(Ed), FRCS(Eng), FIMC, RCS(Ed), (LI 1965-67) was knighted in the 2011 New Year's Honours for his services to medicine. Bill Spray (Housemaster LI 1963-70) recalls Keith's story: "In our first (armchair) conversation with Keith, with my wife Christine as well as with me, we considered Keith's proposed A levels. They were, as I remarked and his Swindon school had intended, splendidly appropriate for engineering. His contribution to the conversation was a rather wistful "I've always wanted to be a doctor." "Keith," said I, "If that's what you want to be, that's what you've got to go for!" We agreed to change the A Level subjects to cover 1st MB needs and that I should introduce him to a very sympathetic OM at St Thomas' Hospital in London. Thereafter he did the rest!"
