Michael Stoddart, one of the founding fathers of the UK venture capital industry, is to speak at the next gathering of the Business, Banking & Finance group on Thursday 25th September in London.

The event will include the entrepreneurs group or any OMs involved with business start-ups.  The venue will be HSBC Private Bank 78, St James Street, courtesy of Club President Robin Janvrin. Tickets are £20 per head to include drinks and nibbles. Tickets for under 30s are £15.

All those OMs who are registered in the Insurance industry will be invited. Just click on 'insurance' under industry details in the Update My Profile section of the website or email marlburianclub@marlboroughcollege.org with your tilte, company name and request to be included in the Insurance Group.

The first event for OMs interested in a career in Insurance, followed by a networking opportunity for those in the Banking and Finance industry group was held at Lloyd’s of London on Tuesday 14th January and proved to be an outstanding success.

Marlburian Club committee member Andrew Barnes (B1 1973-79) kindly initiated and organised the event, which gave young OMs and current pupils the opportunity to shadow Lloyd’s underwriters and brokers for the afternoon. Afterwards Lloyd’s Chairman John Nelson (C3 1961-65) welcomed everyone to a Reception in the Old Lloyd’s Library afterwards, which also included the newly appointed Deputy Chairman of Lloyd’s Rupert Atkin (L1 1971-76).

Sarah Morris MM (2006-2011), who is currently reading Classics at Exeter, attended both the afternoon shadowing session and the Reception that followed. Sarah said she had found the whole experience excellent, made some good contacts and is now keen now to follow a career in this area.

On Sunday 28th April 2013, Marlborough College Malaysia welcomed members of Potong Pasir Community Centre Flying Club to Marlborough College Malaysia. The day started with a talk by Singapore OM Secretary, Huan-Yeong Lau (C2 1970-75), about the hobby of building and flying model aircraft and a brief introduction to aeronautics. The boarders were then treated to a display of various aircraft in action, including a couple of stunt planes and a scale model of a Jet Ranger helicopter.

The highlight for many was the chance to have a go at flying one of their trainer planes. Under expert guidance, the boarders were taught the basics of turning an aircraft under control once it was safely off the ground. We are pleased to report that all of aircraft made it back in one piece!

The College thanked HY Lau and his fellow enthusiasts for such a fantastic day's entertainment and for sowing the seeds of MCM's first Radio Controlled Flying Club!

After starting the Marlborough College Alumni LinkedIn group in October 2008, Tom Tuke-Hastings (BH 1990-95) felt it was high time his 650 members had the opportunity to meet in person. So, on Tuesday 9th April and with the help of colleague Jo Furnival (LI 2002-04), an area was reserved in Monument’s Clause Bar and the champagne was put on ice. This inaugural event enjoyed a good turnout of thirty people over the evening, with alumni ranging from ‘71 leavers to ‘05 leavers and everything in between!

It is hoped that this will be the first LinkedIn link up of many, so do join the group if you would like to stay informed of the date and location of the next one.

The Lacrosse and Hockey matches that had been cancelled in March due to snow had been rescheduled for 9th June. Unfortunately, the Astroturf is currently being resurfaced and the Boys' Hockey has had to be cancelled. Exams have also intervened and made it impossible to draw a full OM team together for the Lacrosse. The Club thanks Tom Morton and Teddie Naish for their sterling efforts in communicating with their team members and the College and Club.

We hope to announce another date for both matches very soon!

You may like to know we are planning an OM Event in Brussels, Belgium later this year. Our OM Club Secretary in Germany, Luise Von Sturmeder, is also planning a gathering shortly. Richard Hilton, the Club Secretary in South Africa, is organising a July event to coincide with the OM Girls' Hockey Tour to Cape Town.

As a matter of course we will send an invitation to all OMs in the region by email, or post, as appropriate. The Banking & Finance Group's inaugural Reception takes place this January, with a Film, TV and Theatre Reception planned for April. Do review the calendar as events are continuously updated.
